Mirzoeff devotes an entire chapter of his introduction to visual culture to Diana’s death, believing it marks “the end of photography and the inauguration of global visual culture” (p.  232).  Even now, a photo of the princess in her last moments almost nine years ago can stir controversy across the planet.  Mirzoeff says that Diana “lived her life in dialog with photography” (p. 253).  Her sons vow to protect her but they don’t understand her status as a global icon.  Photos of her belong to the world, it seems.
