{"id":216,"date":"2008-07-18T17:30:02","date_gmt":"2008-07-18T17:30:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ivyrun.com\/wordpress\/?p=216"},"modified":"2008-07-18T17:30:02","modified_gmt":"2008-07-18T17:30:02","slug":"arent-these-really-leadership-skills","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ivyrun.com\/inanotherplace\/?p=216","title":{"rendered":"Aren&#8217;t These Really Leadership Skills?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tim over at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.assortedstuff.com\/?p=2638\">Assorted Stuff<\/a> pointed me to <a href=\"http:\/\/googleblog.blogspot.com\/2008\/07\/our-googley-advice-to-students-major-in.html\">Google&#8217;s blog post<\/a> that recommends that students major in learning.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s the short list of skills for which they look in new employees:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>analytical reasoning<\/li>\n<li>communication skills<\/li>\n<li>a willingness to experiment<\/li>\n<li> team players<\/li>\n<li>passion and leadership<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As I read the post, I thought about the keynote I&#8217;m doing next week in Franklin County.\u00a0 I&#8217;m including a section about 21st century skills.\u00a0 For awhile now, I&#8217;ve been doing a crosswalk between Tom Friedman&#8217;s list of skills and the 21st century skills:<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ivyrun.simplykaren.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/crosswalk01.jpg?resize=432%2C255\" alt=\"skills\" height=\"255\" width=\"432\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s easy to see where Google fits right in and I&#8217;ll certainly be adding them to my presentation. (Thanks, Tim, for your very timely post.)\u00a0 By the way, for those who haven&#8217;t read Friedman, CQ + PQ &gt; IQ stands for Curiosity Quotient and Passion Quotient which are greater than Intelligence Quotient.<\/p>\n<p>But, I&#8217;ve also been taking this a step further.\u00a0 Google includes &#8220;leadership&#8221; as one of its skills and I would suggest that all the skills are leadership skills. \u00a0 Reading the lists reminds me of my favorite leadership writer, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Warren_Bennis\">Warren Bennis<\/a>.\u00a0 I use Bennis for my email signature:\u00a0 &#8220;People who cannot invent and reinvent themselves must be content with borrowed postures, secondhand ideas, fitting in instead of standing out.&#8221;\u00a0 When I started playing with <a href=\"http:\/\/witchyrichy.tumblr.com\/\">Tumblr<\/a> again this week, I started by posting more Bennis quotes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0738208175?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=ivru-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0738208175\">On Becoming a Leader<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=ivru-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=0738208175\" style=\"border: medium none  ! important; margin: 0px ! important\" border=\"0\" height=\"1\" width=\"1\" \/> is his classic work.  He lists the following characteristics of leaders:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Passion<\/li>\n<li>Daring<\/li>\n<li>Distinctive Voice<\/li>\n<li>Integrity<\/li>\n<li>Curiosity<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Adaptive_capacity\">Adaptive Capacity<\/a> (essentially the ability to learn)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Note the similarities, and this from someone writing in the 20th century.\u00a0 Maybe the skills needed to survive in the 21st century are not so different from those needed in the past. I think the major difference now is that we are beginning to understand that these skills are needed by everyone, not just those who are heading to CEO land.\u00a0 As Tim writes, &#8220;That list of factors would pretty much prepare students to work almost anywhere.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>All this thinking about leadership was reinforced for me as I sat at a stop light the other day.
