Lesson Plan -11th Grade American Lit
Romantic Period/Era

Sol- 11.3 The student will read and analyze relationships among American literature, history, and culture.

Objectives-

  1. Students will recall the names of specific authors and the names of their most important works.
  2. Students will list the qualities that distinguish the Romantic Period from preceding eras.
  3. Students will define language choices and devices that authors use, such as rhetorical question, sarcasm, satire, irony.

Strategies– 1.) Class will begin with a review of literary terms used by authors. 2.) I will lecture re: the Romantic Period and the full flourishing of a distinctive American literature . 3.) We will the read aloud selected passages from Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter from the text. At appropriate times I will explain how Hawthorne used literary devices and what makes this piece “romantic”. 4.) I will then conduct a short review of important facts related to the text. 5.) The last 15 minutes will be independent practice on tomorrow’s homework.

Assessment– Objectives related to Hawthorne will be assessed by use of a ten-item matching exercise on the unit test.
